Initial appearances suggest that this Indian Restaurant may be worth a visit. It claims to be in the top 100 Indian restaurants in the UK and has been ‘Serving Finest Food Since 1982’. Further claims include a ‘Charter House Diploma’, ‘Good Curry Guide’ ‘Chef of the Year’ and ‘Masterchef Roll of Honour’. On top of all of the above, they claim to specialise in vegetarian cuisine and serve all meals with mixed fresh vegetables. With all these boasts and accolades you can’t help thinking one of two things. Firstly, that this must be a very good restaurant with high standards and fresh high quality food OR be very suspicious of a restaurant with that many boasts. If your instinct errs towards the second that you’d be absolutely correct. This place is truly, truly awful. On our first and last visit, the meal started with 2 Cobra beers. These were described in the menu as being 660ml but in fact came in pints and they were like the forthcoming naan bread, very flat and luke warm. Next came the popadams. Again disappointment reigned as we were served barely warm and chewy popadams with average pickles. The main meal was as you’d expect, the biggest disappointment. Two vegetarian curries (their speciality don’t forget) were ordered, one being a Balti. The sizzling arrival signalled some promise of a decent main course, but of course this wasn’t the case. For a restaurant that boasts being in the top 100 in the UK, you wouldn’t expect to find frozen vegetables in your curry would you? Sweet corn, diced carrots, soggy cauliflower (in the only way that frozen cauliflower can be soggy), broad beans. All this was in a tasteless curry sauce/paste that was just so bland. Where were the spices? The curry taste? This is when we started to realise we were in a fourth rate restaurant masquerading as something it clearly wasn’t. I thought the food might have made up for the cheap Formica table tops, cutlery and napkins etc. but no, this place was/is terrible, the service was/is terrible and its an insult to Indian food to call what they make curry. And if you think this was a one off you’d be wrong. We asked the waiter why frozen veg was used, he said it was because they had run out of fresh vegetables (the thing that all their meals are made from). This was clearly a lie, we have friends who visited this restaurant over a year ago and had exactly the same experience. I just wished they had told us before we visited this place. On top of this, the landlady at the hotel where we stayed was dismayed to hear we visited this place due to its poor reputation. She told us that she never recommends people to go there. If you are ever in Berwick-Upon-Tweed and are looking for a decent restaurant, do yourself a favour and avoid this one. You have been warned. The bitter taste you’ll have in your mouth when you leave won’t just be from the terrible food, it will be from the overall experience of visiting this place.

I was taken to this place by some friends a few weeks ago and I can honestly say I don't have a bad word to say about it. The food was excellent, as was the service. The manager took the time to explain exactly what we were ordering, and to make alternative recommendations once we had described the sort of thing we wanted. My only problem is that I live too far away to become a regular. Highly recommended.

Spices really does set a precedent for all the generic Indian restaurants out there. The owner genuinely cares about the quality of the food and service. Only fresh spices are used, no powders and hence you experience something quite extraordinary. The Garlic and Chilli Naan is amazing. Try the Indian rice for a touch of spice. The Dhallsha is tremendous + as mentioned in previous reviews the owner is more than happy to put together a dish to suit your taste buds. You owe it to yourself to experience true Curry flavours + tell your friends (but not too many as I want to go again on the weekend!!) Enjoy

I booked the Mango Tree for a dinner for four people on Sat 1st Dec as it had a lot of good reviews online. It lived up to it's reputation. It is a small restaurant, tucked away in a side street with an unexciting view of a warehouse. However, the interior is new and trendy. The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. They were especially helpful when I left my bag behind and then had to go back and collect it.The food was very nice with a good selection of meat and vegetarian dishes including some unusual ones.We had starters and mains, including nan bread. Three of us had meat curries and one had the vegetarian option - they were all very nice. We had a nice, reasonably priced bottle of red wine and two of us had Cobra beer too. When a waiter accidentally dropped a little food into a wine glass when clearing the table, he immediately (voluntarily) replaced it with a full glass of house red. The toilets were nice and clean too.The only tiny complaint would be that they had included the 15% service charge, but luckily one of my friends spotted it before we overpaid! That may be common practice in all restaurants in London though. I don't know if it was because I was complaining to my friends about that, but we were then each offered a drink of our choice (including spirits) on the house. Overall a very nice meal, good service and reasonably priced (I think we paid £25-£30 per head for starters, mains and 2 glasses of wine each). If I lived nearer I'd go back every week!!!

This place deserves the praise it gets. Great service with recommendations and explanations of the food and cooking from the owner/head chef. My friends and I all took the dinner menu, the food was all very tasty and at an unbeatable price. Everything was delicately spiced and not swimming in oil or too creamy like at too many other places. The nan and the rice were fluffy and fresh. I don't think you will find a better value in North London. Next time the chef says he will cook us something special if we ask. The host with the most, no question.

Set a stones throw from Borough Market and London Bridge station you could be forgiven for overlooking Mango Tree. You would however be missing out on a treat. Opened less than six months ago this restaurant is a breath of fresh air. Smartly decorated you are welcomed by friendly staff in to light clean surroundings. There is a comprehensive wine list and choice of lagers, from Kingfisher and Cobra to Becks. There is a wide variety of dishes on the menu, from the wonderful Stuffed Murchi starter (stuffed pepper) to the excellent Makhani Murg. So far I have not encountered any greasy dishes which is a pleasant change from the norm. The staff are attentive but not over bearing. Even with a rowdy table of eight our meals were served quickly with no lengthy waits between courses. I can only sing praises of this place, pay a visit and you will be wanting to return for more. Opening hours are 12.30 - 14.30 17.30 - 23.00 7 days

I wasn't expecting much from this place and to be honest, i didn't get much. The food took absolutely ages (30 minutes plus) so much so that i could hear other customers commnenting that 'that man over there' still hadn't received his food yet!!!! So when it came i was hoping for some extra special as it was a signature dish from the chef. I can't remember exactly what i ordered but it was supposed to be medium. If that's medium then i would hate to see their mild! There was no kick to it whatsoever, completly without any life at all and the garlic naan was severly without garlic. Going to a lot of Indian restaurants i know what's a good curry and what is not, and overall, this was a shoddy and rubbish meal. Don't bother going unless you have low standards!
